It’s nearly September and you know what that means?
More of the same really (for most of us).
When you’re the boss, the work doesn’t stop just because Summer starts. Still, there’s a definite mind shift as September teeters on the horizon. Just like we get the “Sunday Scaries” at the end of every weekend, getting back into our routines after “summer vacation” can be a little daunting. Of course, there’s nothing to worry about! In fact, this is a great opportunity to start setting goals for the coming year.
5 Tips for Breaking the Back to School Blues
1. Take Inventory
Who doesn’t love some back to school shopping? Getting the new you together and putting your best foot forward is one of the benefits of that 3 months away.
What do you need this year? Only you can say for sure.
Besides the physical things that may need to be restocked, let’s take a look at of some of the less obvious inventory. Ask yourself:
What were you excited about this past year?
Did you manage to meet some goals?
What obstacles did you overcome? Where can you improve?
When a store assesses their physical inventory, they don’t get too sentimental, they’re tallying up facts and figures. You’re doing the same. Be proud about what went well, but don’t let the less stellar stuff break your stride. Look at those things as room to grow.
2. Make an Action Plan
While summer may not mean work stops, it might mean your schedule is a little looser. It’s easier to push things out of the way and meander from task to task. That is, of course, the best way to end up with a to-do list the length of your arm.
How do you get back on track? Set some goals!
What do you want to accomplish this year? Think big, and then work backwards into something that might be a little more achievable.
What obstacles might prevent you from achieving that goal? Those aren’t obstacles anymore! They’re stepping stones to a plan of action.
Don’t forget to go back to your previous list and see what you didn’t love about last year. What are ways you can improve on that this year? Those goals and problems aren’t so big when you break time down into actionable steps. You’ll feel more confident going into the new year when you have more control.
3. Schedule in Success
Ideally, the last thing you had to schedule was a beach day. Soon though, you’ll be trading in that margarita for meetings. Avoid feeling that work whiplash by doing some scheduling now.
For example, some of those actionable steps we mentioned previously could use some time limits. You’re more likely to achieve a goal if it’s on a calendar where you can work toward it in a focused way. Don’t over think it, be reasonable with yourself. And remember...It’s your deadline, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t meet it, just be honest and try again.
This is also a great time to consider your sales schedule for the year. We’re heading towards that non-stop holiday time, people! Don’t wait until the last minute to plan out your offerings because by then it’s usually too late to do you any financial good. Need some guidance here? 4. Summer Self Care
What kind of list would this be without a self care mention? If you’re feeling anxious about the coming year, take a breath and do something that eases your mind. Everyone is different, so do something you feel in control of, whether it be a manicure or a walk in the park.
However, it should be noted that, self care isn’t self sabotage. If you’re indulging in sheet masks to avoid organizing, it might be good to take a moment and revisit step 2 above.
