George & Hector's
12 Week Better Babe Challenge

September 2007

Georgie & Hector

Meet Lisa, the lucky winner of the Georgie & Hector 12 Week Better Babe Challenge. When Lisa entered the competition for the Better Babe Challenge she told us "... My definition of BABES = a group of Brave, Affirmative, Beautiful, Energetic and Sophisticated women. I want to define 'Babe' by the end of 2007!..."

From August, we will be following Lisa's progress as she embarks on the change of a lifetime! Lisa is working towards increased motivation to achieve the goals she has set for herself both mentally and physically ... and the team at Georgie & Hector are going to help and encourage her in her journey, with a combination of practical, nutritional, mindset and physical advice and programs.

Lisa's diary - September 2007

Hi Babes!

I'm heading into my 5th week of the Georgie & Hector program - nearly half way! I am still loving the program and have been really surprised by the amount of confidence and determination that I have discovered in myself! I was expecting that by half way through the program I would be really struggling to keep things on track but I'm actually finding that I am more determined than I was in the beginning to make sure that I stick to the promises that I made myself.

As you all know, one of my main goals on the program was to really improve my fitness and strength. I have been working hard with Courtney on my strength (especially my push ups!) and I have been making sure that I keep up my cardio at home on a daily basis. It has been hard to do something every day but I find that if I get up nice and early and put my shoes on straight away I can get out of the house and do an hour exercise before I get to work! If I can't get myself out of bed in the morning I have been riding my exercise bike at home while I watch TV at night, which helps to pass the time more quickly. The thing that I have learnt is that any exercise is better than doing nothing. Sometimes when I get home the last thing I want to do is exercise but once you get going it really isn't that bad and you really do notice the difference in the way you feel!

I re-visited my cardio test with Courtney last week and I was so happy with myself with the progress that I had made. We do simple tests like step ups, push ups, skipping, squats, sprints etc. and I had improved in almost every test! I hadn't anticipated that my fitness would improve so much but it was really satisfying to know that the training had paid off.

My biggest thrill to date has been the Bridge to Brisbane. It was only 3 months ago that I had to do a 4km run for a corporate triathlon - of which I struggled pretty much the entire way! On Sunday I ran the entire 12km course in a fraction over an hour - I was so proud of myself and it really made all of the effort worth while. I went into the run not really knowing if I could run the whole way as I have only really been running about 8-9km at home, but to finish the race and in a fairly good time was so exciting! That experience has made me more determined to keep up my fitness and set myself some goals to run in more races in the future.

As for the way I feel about myself, I am really noticing the changes in my body from eating well and exercising regularly. A month into the program I had lost 4 kilograms, which was a really great result for me. I have my second BMI test (measures body fat, fluid, muscle mass etc) this week so I will really get to see the real results of the last 5 weeks.

I am still working on fine tuning my life goals with Helen, but as usual she has been really great and supportive with my life coaching. I am finding the exercises really wonderful for finding direction and purpose - and making the most of what you do in your day to day life to get the results you want.

I will be in touch soon.

Week 5 - Statistics, goals and achievements

The 4 Week Report!

Body Coaching

Lisa has experienced great results in her first 4 weeks. As you can see by the varied measures we use to benchmark, Lisa has improved in almost every single one.

MEASURE WEEK 1 WEEK 4
Weight 57kg 53kg
BMI 19.8 19.5
Fat Free Mass 44kg (81.4%) 45.1kg (85.1%)
Fat Mass 10kg (18.6%) 7.9kg (14.9%)

Lisa has lost 4 kg as well as lowering her Body Mass Index. Although the BMI changes are small you can see that the Fat Free Mass has increased (this means more muscle on the body) and the Fat Mass has decreased (less fat on the body). A great outcome on every measure!

Measurements

MEASURE WEEK 1 WEEK 4
Chest 84cm 80cm
Waist 72cm 65.5cm
Hip 88cm 85cm
Arm 25.5cm 24cm
Thigh 48cm 48cm
Tummy 75cm 74cm

Again, a fantastic result with Lisa losing cm's in almost every area of her body. Lisa's frame was quite small to start with so these losses make a remarkable impact on her overall size and shape.

Strength

MEASURE WEEK 1 WEEK 4
Push-ups (military) 9 20
Bench Press 2.5kg 12.5kg
Cable Row 15kg 20kg
Squats 8kg 30kg

Lisa achieved her goal of achieving 20 military (on toes) push ups in this first month! She also made massive improvements in the weights lifted. Note the 10kg increase in her bench press and 22kg increase with squats - incredible!!

Cardio

MEASURE (per minute) WEEK 1 WEEK 4
Skips 116 155
Dips 23 39
Hill Climber 93 105
Run 4km 12km

Wow!! Lisa reached her goal of being able to run 12km! I'm so impressed with Lisa's effort in the Bridge to Brisbane. This can be quite a demanding run on the body if you are not use to it. The goal for Lisa was to just keep her feet moving and measure her success at various check points throughout the race. When she finished the run, she said even though she was tired she still felt really good! Before beginning her fitness program she was only able to run 4kms. Only recently Lisa has discovered she really enjoys running and that it can be easy! Whilst Lisa was away, she managed to locate a gym and still find time to do her daily cardio exercise and she felt better for that. Over the next few weeks we will still continue to measure Lisa's fitness through her cardio benchmarking and see the improvements from the first time we tested.

Nutrition
Lisa is still doing really well with her low GI eating plan. She recently returned from a trip away to Melbourne only to tell me how delicious the food was down there and that she even found a low GI café! Whilst Lisa was away she managed to stay on track even though she wasn't able to do her own food preparation - her dedication is evident by the great food choices she makes even whilst eating out. She also managed to take her own lunch on a business trip with her as she didn't know when or what they would be serving on the day. Georgie & Hector encourage food preparation as a key factor to successful (i.e. healthy) eating.

Life Coaching

Savings
Lisa has been allocating money to a savings plan but was unsure of why she was saving. It is extremely important to the success of your outcome to know 'why' you are doing it. We did a review of her goals and identified that the two options were an overseas holiday or an investment property. After further discussions, Lisa decided the investment property was the smartest option. Our next objective was to ensure that Lisa's spending was in line with her goals. We put a daily action list in place to take the small but important steps toward her major goal. Like physical goals, financial rewards come with small but consistent efforts. One small but effective task was for Lisa to start taking her lunch to work. At the end of the month, this adds up to a considerable amount of money that will now be funneled into Lisa's property account. Banking her 'lunch money' is a small pain for a phenomenal gain!

Confidence
Lisa has a goal to attend networking functions successfully. Success for Lisa means confidently approaching others to instigate a conversation. Our plan of action includes:

  • Lisa researching and reading personal development material in preparation for events

  • Making the commitment to introduce herself at every function she attends - Watch out for Lisa at the next Babes Miss-Behaving drinks!

  • Fine tuning and practicing her 'Elevator speech' for such events

  • Focus on listening when others speak (When you're truly listening, it diverts your attention from your own fears)

  • Asking a friend (Lisa refers to her as a 'Networking Guru') to mentor her on confident and successful networking

  • Commit to 'less munching and more mingling'

Mindsets
Emotionally Lisa feels she has a more positive frame of mind allowing her to be more open to new ideas and opportunities as they present themselves. Here are some of the activities Lisa got involved in within the last 5 weeks that previously she would not have considered:

  • Netball: Lisa reported that before Georgie & Hector she would have declined the offer to join a any team, preferring to focus on why she couldn't do it, rather than looking at how she could. Some of her past excuses had been no time, how was she going to get there after work? Blah, blah blah....!) but this time she considered all the positives and accepted her friend's offer. In the end it wasn't even about the netball it was about spending time with friends, meeting some new people and taking some time out for herself. She said overall she is also now less likely to 'sweat the small stuff' - a case of fit body, fit mind!

  • Training: Lisa recently went to Melbourne for a 5 day break with her sister and some girlfriends. While most of us would have been focused on shopping, eating and generally indulging, Lisa armed herself with a gym pass and trained while away - well done Lisa! For all you Babes out there waiting for your calendar to clear, or the right time, Georgie and Hector is not about putting your life on hold for the duration, it's about making lifestyle changes whilst 'living life' at the same time, as Lisa has proven.

  • Cooking: Whilst in Melbourne, Lisa also attended an Italian cooking course which was another goal on her list - so she can now add pasta making to her culinary skills.

  • Fun Run: Some people would find it a contradiction to put those two words together 'Fun & Run' but not Lisa - She put in an outstanding effort in the recent Bridge to Brisbane fun run. Lisa amazed herself with the will power she had to complete the run in such good time - 12kms in 1hr, 3min and 11sec! A true testament to her commitment and dedication to the Georgie and Hector program (oh and G & H never doubted her, we knew she had it in her)
