Meet Mr Toxic

We all choose to share our lives with a variety of people on a professional and personal level, be they colleagues, friends, associates, family or partners. A recent series of events caused me to sit down and really asses the value of those people I am allowing into my life and business and the positive ... or negative influences they can bring.

More specifically to the point of the topic, are the men or partners we share our lives with and the important role they have in the mindset in which we operate on a daily basis. Often they're the ones who we come home to at night, wake up to in the morning and whom we seek advice from each time we find ourselves just a little overwhelmed in our businesses and life in general.

But what happens when the man of your dreams and your "pillar of support" turns out to be not so supportive of your endeavours and uses the front of 'loving boyfriend' as means to sabotage your career and personal life?

I can tell you what happens, and it's not pretty. Lets meet loving boyfriend turned super villain "Mr Toxic".

You meet Mr Perfect, he's kind, and he's funny and really digs the confidence and motivation in which you so diligently pursue your goals. He's supportive and fills you with kind words of encouragement when the going gets tough. Then, slowly but surely "Mr Perfect" turns into Mr Not-So-Perfect and his support and words of encouragement turns into full blown attacks and verbal put downs aimed at destroying your self confidence and transforming you from a motivated, bright and vivacious person to a shell of your former self. Your "Mr Perfect" has released suedo personality "Mr Toxic".

Now putting comical nicknames aside, Mr Toxic can actually be a huge threat to your personal and career goals and lets face it, he can be down right just plain scary.

I've lived with a Mr Toxic for a little over a year and found myself fall victim to some really obscene attacks targeted at stopping me from achieving my goals and endeavours.

Mr Toxic felt the need to harass and intimidate me before meetings, reduced me to tears on the floor when we secured a large account, continually criticized my dress choices and even went to the point of actually stealing my car post break up to really stamp out the fact that I am 'undeserving' of my achievements.

Now, I've probably dated the extreme in the scenario but this is surprisingly not an uncommon story for most women in business and this is really disturbing. This has been experienced by a really large number of colleagues, family members and friends on a professional level. In fact, this is a form of domestic violence is a reality to one in six women you meet. These women, not unlike myself are smart, strong, confident and key players in their business fields.

My experience has taught me to really prioritise the duty of care I have towards my business, my life and myself. To succeed and both professionally and personally you need the strength and knowledge to identify toxic people and remove them from your life and business.

We all have the option, in most cases to allow someone into our lives and make the decision to remove them. These toxic people have no place on your path to success or happiness in life and business.

Life should be filled with great laughter, great triumph, great people and of course great shoes.
