How do you lead so others will follow?
Have you ever tried to galvanise a group into action, to lead them to success, only to be met with blank indifference or, even worse, hostile resistance?

It's a tremendously frustrating experience, and one that can leave you feeling bewildered as to the next step.
Through my work as an executive coach, I've seen this challenge presented to corporate leaders at the highest level. But it's not just CEOs who must overcome these kind of situations. I've had to call upon similar leadership skills in government and community roles, and as part of my most recent project - creating an online multimedia lifestyle program for women.
There are many qualities needed to be a great leader - one that inspires others to follow - and one of the most important qualities is vision.
You must have a vision for the future
Leaders imagine, dream and innovate. Often they come to the forefront in moments of crisis and offer creative, sometimes radical, solutions. At other times they may simply see an opportunity for improvement and growth. They have a desire for change and a determination to make it happen.
As a leader, you can't achieve change alone. You need to inspire others to become supporters, to take up your vision as their own.
Articulate a shared vision to inspire others to follow
First you must build a detailed mental picture of success, of the time when all your objectives have been achieved, and then articulate this clearly for yourself.
This is a great start, but it won't be enough to carry a group of people forward. The next vital step is to communicate your vision through shared language and story.
Checklist for creating your shared vision
Take the time and space you need to create your vision statement and then check in:
- Have you thought creatively, expansively and imaginatively?
- Is your vision statement inspirational and aspirational for you and your listeners?
- Is the vision clear and simple? Make sure your vision is easily grasped so it can be taken up and passed on by others.
- Have you used common and shared language? Have you connected with the story and dreams of those you want to inspire?
- Does it generate excitement when you share it with others? If not, revisit the checklist.
- Now, write about it, talk about it, and review it regularly with those who support you. Allow them to become co-creators of the vision as it evolves.
