Lifting the Lid on Learning by Louisa Hinchen, General Manager, Hallis Queensland

Having returned to study five months ago, I have to remind myself of the relative recency of this huge part of my life. Driven by the need to adapt to the new demands, in addition to family and work, I can barely remember life before tutorials, libraries and syndicate working groups. It is with an overwhelming sense of relief that I can share with you my first tangible achievement completing the subject 'Leadership and Communication' ,and am actually happy with the result!

It is a great turn of the tables. With three children all commencing their life learning journey where I have been so focused on all their milestones of development, assessments and school reports, and now, it is some trepidation that it's my turn to celebrate success.

I trust you will not interpret this celebration as 'gloating', but it speaks more of the need to nurture our own self-esteem and embrace affirmations and acknowledgements that come our way from time to time. Politeness and modesty are embedded virtues that sometimes, quash our moments of celebration.

So the reality is, one down and eleven to go! So much energy went into getting this journey underway, I now realise more than ever that in order to succeed, I'm in it for the long haul. I am cautious about how much I enjoy the break between subjects as I don't want to loose the momentum and good practices that have served me well to get to this point. Sadly, the attrition rate of students early in most MBA programs are typically very high, and I don't intend on becoming part of those statistics.

My supportive team of colleagues at Hallis may have a chuckle at this point, knowing too well that my desire to communicate is insatiable. However I'm in an interim phase of reflection and consolidation of energy. To keep me moving through the next eleven subjects I am undertaking some 'self talk' that goes along the lines of:

  • Time doesn't stand still - the new year is fast approaching - time to make new plans.

  • Make a resolution underpinning - It's about you, your learning, your development.

  • The decision to continue is as tough as the decision to get started. The key is keeping focused and enjoying the ride!

To all of you, I wish you well in your learning endeavors in the New Year in which ever shape or direction you choose to take. I sincerely hope that you are considering where to from here, and not settling for the safe option. That you embrace the knowledge that learning helps you grow on so many levels, and that you make 2008 about you, your learning and your development.
