Your inner child

Her laughter made me smile like the Cheshire cat as it echoed across the pool. It was filled with excitement and such delight. This was her first swimming lesson. Her security in the water wasn't based on her enjoyment alone though. My attitude would determine her approach to this new venture and each one thereafter for the rest of her life.

Think about your own childhood. Were you encouraged to do your best, or pushed to achieve more as "good was ever good enough"?

The examples we set for our children, and the children around us, are also a reflection of how we treat ourselves.

The child who grows up with love, learns love. However, the child who grows up with pressure to perform, learns resentment. This is a contributing factor for the many young adults displaying OCD, perfectionism and other behavioural and emotional traits. These can then link to depression, suicide, divorce, financial debt and many other signs of the times'.

Our relationship with our parents has great bearing on our relationship with ourselves. We talk about self esteem and self respect, but rarely about nurturing our inner child. There is a child in each of us that is eager to laugh, to play and to experience new environments and activities. We need to peel away the outer layers and enjoy who we find underneath. There are many talents and skills we have kept buried inside ourselves for fear of feeling exposed or vulnerable, should we attempt to bring them out.

It's a wonderful thing when you are given the opportunity to nurture a child. You watch them grow, like a seed into a beautiful flower, blossoming and glowing in the sunshine. They are free and at ease with themselves.
